From developing policy to communicating recommendations, public servants need to understand and use data with confidence. We helped Australian Public Service (APS) staff strengthen their data literacy through e-learning modules and practical workshops. This gave them the tools to interpret data accurately and communicate findings clearly.

We were able to discuss real examples. It was well paced and very interesting – I didn’t realise how interesting statistics could be.

Drawing on our expertise in data communication, we worked with learning specialists from the Australian Public Service Commission (APSC) to develop a comprehensive training program. We scoped, wrote, designed and implemented 5 e-learning modules that met the required learning and accessibility standards.
The program was rolled out across more than 60 government departments and agencies, making essential data literacy training available to staff across the APS.
The e-learning modules guided participants through 5 essential areas of data literacy:
- Using data effectively
- Undertaking research
- Understanding and working with statistics
- Visualising information clearly
- Developing evidence-informed recommendations.
To build on this foundation, we also developed and delivered a series of one-day, face-to-face workshops focused on statistics.
Rather than focusing on statistical theory alone, participants worked collaboratively through practical examples, exploring how to apply their new knowledge in their day-to-day work. Our facilitator guided discussions, answered questions and helped participants connect what they were learning to real-work situations.
Feedback highlighted the value of combining accessible online learning with practical, interactive training.
Participants also appreciated the opportunity to explore statistics in a hands-on and engaging way.
