Improving usability for a climate data portal

Discovery and strategy Effective content Environment Science and technology

Data from climate models, including climate projections, are essential for making informed planning decisions. Biotext worked with a state government department to create a content strategy to improve the usability of a climate data web portal.

The portal provides access to large and complex data that capture many climate variables, emissions scenarios, timeframes and model combinations. The strategy provided practical guidance for the department to redevelop the portal to better meet the needs of its diverse user base.

Our solution

Our discovery phase involved auditing the portal content and reviewing existing user research and insights. We converted common insights into journey maps and job stories to get a clearer understanding of how different user groups might interact with the portal. A key deliverable to help the department promote the portal, was a map of the existing content ecosystem that highlighted key entry points to the portal for different users.

Our development phase involved building an intuitive information architecture for the portal based on the pain points and opportunities we identified during discovery. We validated the information architecture through testing with current and future portal users.

To help the department produce and maintain effective content for the portal, we also developed a bespoke writing guide based on best-practice content principles to meet the needs of portal users.

We loved translating the strategy insights into the practical writing guide to help the team implement the strategy recommendations.
