We helped staff at the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) strengthen their writing skills through a series of practical plain English workshops.
Understanding your audience is the first step to creating effective plain English content. Knowing who you’re writing for and what they need helps you present information in a way that works for them. We worked with ACCC leaders to develop a training program that put these principles into practice. Building on our successful Writing and editing complex content workshop, we designed, piloted and refined a course specifically for ACCC staff.
Throughout the course, we focused on building a plain English mindset. We helped participants consider their readers at every stage rather than simply apply a set of writing rules.
The program consisted of 4 modules, delivered over 2 days to cater to the availability of the team. Participants worked through the entire writing process, from planning effective communication and organising content to choosing clear language and conducting final quality assurance checks.
In post-workshop surveys, all respondents said they expected to apply their learning to their job, and more than 80% said they would likely recommend the workshop to a colleague.
