Understanding the current status of native fish populations in the Murray–Darling Basin is a critical first step to supporting their recovery. Biotext worked with the Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) to develop a suite of documents communicating the findings of the first Australian native fish status assessment.
The 300-page technical report was the first comprehensive assessment of all native fish, freshwater spiny crayfish and mussel species across the whole of the Basin. We translated the detailed findings into clear communication products for government and public audiences, and designed a series of infographics to increase understanding and user engagement. We also copyedited the technical report for consistency, clarity and accuracy.

Our solution
Our collaborative scoping process involved regular meetings and check-ins with the MDBA team and relevant stakeholders to identify the target audiences and aims of the report and supporting materials.
Our content development process involved creating a key findings report for policy and stakeholder audiences, which included infographics to increase understanding of the data. We also wrote a plain language 2-page summary of the assessment findings for general audiences. To support the internal teams who would be implementing the report’s findings, we developed 2 documents that presented the context and recommendations.
